Lacan is the deepest theoretical root in the framework; the source of both the quilting concept and the structure of desire that underlies the user fantasy frame. The quilting point (point de capiton) appears in Lacan's account of how language works: without quilting points, meaning slides indefinitely along the chain of signifiers, never settling into a stable interpretation. A quilting point retroactively fixes the meaning of everything that preceded it. In product terms: the "email killer" framing retroactively organizes all of Slack's other signals; the name, the channels, the interface; into a coherent meaning that wouldn't be there otherwise. Lacan's graph of desire provides the theoretical structure for understanding pull; why desire is not a simple wanting of an object but a structured relationship mediated by the social and symbolic order. Desire is always desire of the Other's desire; you desire to be desired by the same category of people you identify with. This is why identity is the first component of the fantasy frame: what others like you want tells you what to want. The concept of the objet petit a; the object that causes desire; is the direct theoretical source of the framework's name. The objet petit a is never the thing itself; it's the gap, the promise, what the thing seems to offer. You don't desire the product. You desire what the product seems to promise about who you could become.
